If you have asked this question, you probably already know the answer. The standard rule for an office with one dentist is 3 handpieces per operatory. You would have 1 in use, 1 in the autoclave and one cooling for the next patient.
A busy multiple Dentist office, that number of needed handpieces would jump to 5 or more per operatory. If you ever find yourself using a warm or hot handpiece fresh out of the autoclave you definitely need more.
Taking a hot handpiece and running water on it so it will be cool enough to use is a huge no-no!
It will fracture the bearings plastic cage that holds the tiny balls in place and you will soon need a new turbine installed. If you do that 3 or 4 times you will have spent enough in repairs to purchase that extra handpiece.
