Now that 2022 is on its way out, we must look toward 2023. This is especially true in terms of the expected dental trends that will occur throughout the upcoming year. As a dental professional, we are sure that you have found 2022 to be a highly intriguing year. Offices across the nation saw a large influx of patients – more so than in previous years – as most were returning after the shutdown to receive dental care.

Many invited this transition from no patients; however, there were many practices that found themselves bogged down. The key to success in any dental practice is to know what to expect. Here, we will outline what is expected to occur in the industry throughout 2023.

Convenience is In Demand

Since the COVID surge and the associated lockdown, convenience has been placed as a high priority among consumers. Those same consumers are your patients. More than ever before, consumers are making a lot of purchases online. Appointments can now be conducted through voice chat telehealth services. Information is sought through the click of buttons. The demand for convenience will continue to grow – even in the dental industry. This is one of the top trends of 2023 for the dental industry. To meet the demand, your dental practice should place an emphasis on the following:

Create an online presence that is highly robust and offers a high level of convenience. For example, allow patients to set up appointments through your website. Provide a means for check-in prior to arriving for their appointment. For certain types of appointments, allow patients to sign up for telehealth visits. Also, provide a comprehensive database of information that patients may access to learn about conditions and situations that impact dental health.

Improve the overall customer experience. Ways to succeed at this endeavor include frequent communication, entertaining waiting rooms, entertaining patient rooms, taking steps to reduce patient anxiety, and striving to cultivate solid relationships with your patients.

Finally, offer your patients the ability to have same-day appointments. Just as an example, some patients may wake up with a highly uncomfortable tooth infection. Why make them wait? Offer certain services on the same day and you are sure to be a hit among your patients!

Creative Payment Solutions

For years, it always comes down to what a patient’s insurance will cover and what it will not. Many patients do without care because they cannot afford the services upfront if their insurance does not provide coverage. In these situations, patients will typically walk away from the practice and learn ways to cope with whatever it is that they are experiencing.

The 2023 dental trend will be more flexible patient payment options. Provide a payment system that is affordable or a dental membership plan. Allow patients to finance their care. Provide discounts for referrals. There are many creative ways that you may set up payment solutions for your patients. Get started today!

Be Unique

Most dental practices offer the same treatments and services as other dental practices. In 2023, though, patients are going to be in search of those that offer unique treatments and services. What differentiates your dental practice from the others? Perhaps you offer kid-friendly services or care for those that have high levels of anxiety when it comes to dentists. Maybe you are known for your inexpensive alternative solutions to dental care.

Zoom in on what makes you different and broadcast that. Be creative! New and unique is now the most effective means of attracting and keeping patients! People are bored with the same old thing. It is time to set yourself apart. In doing so, you will find that you experience high levels of success!

As you can see, many unique dental trends are expected in 2023. These include catering to the convenience of your patients, developing creative payment solutions, and placing an emphasis on what makes YOUR practice unique – different from all of the rest. If you want to achieve high levels of success in the upcoming year, it is going to take a little work. The time to start is NOW.

Hughes Dental offers many solutions for dental handpieces and other instruments that you use in your practice. While you are creating your new business plan for 2023, send in your handpieces to get ready for the new year.
Services

Our business includes a variety of certified dental handpiece experts that are well-versed in all aspects of the dental industry. Our qualified technicians provide the highest quality inspections, maintenance, and repairs. Best of all, we offer all of this at the most competitive prices within the industry. We also specialize in electric motors and all associated attachments, and surgical drills.

Our Process

The process that we conduct on the dental handpieces that we receive is both comprehensive and exceptional. The following offers a brief explanation of it:

When you ship your dental handpieces to us, we will start by running the instrument to determine if there are any issues.

We follow this initial test with a comprehensive inspection of all components of the device. This includes the bearings, the chuck component, the air, and all other aspects of the unit.

We will then determine if there are any clogs or if the dental instrument has any type of water leak.

If we find that no maintenance or repair is necessary, we will immediately contact you.

If we discover that maintenance and/or repair IS necessary, we will contact you right away.

We utilize a standard rebuild as outlined in our detailed price sheet. If your dental handpiece requires more than is listed/offered through our basic services, we will be in touch to explain what needs to be done and are completely transparent and consistent in our pricing.

If we find that the dental handpiece cannot successfully be repaired and you are in need of a replacement, we will contact you and explain the situation. We will then walk you through the process and pricing associated with the replacement unit.

Once we have completed the process, we will work with the staff of your dental practice to teach the steps that are required for the proper care and the general maintenance of your dental instruments. During that time, we will go over any questions and/or concerns that you may have.

If you would like an estimate, we will provide them to you. All you have to do is ask!

Finally, we work to ensure your dental handpiece maintenance and/or repairs are completed within a 24-hour period. If we find that it will take longer than this, we will contact you right away.

We are not a fly-by-night company that simply pulls the hard-earned profits from your practice. We are completely committed to ensuring that your instruments function properly at all times and that you get your money’s worth when it comes to the maintenance and/or repair of your dental handpieces.

Sirona dental handpieces are considered to be among the most durable and highest-quality dental instruments currently on the market. When you bring these wonderfully-crafted dental handpieces into your practice, you will immediately find that they have greater levels of speed than other brands and are exquisitely designed to ensure optimal comfort – in terms of ergonomics. You will experience improved levels of control and will be amazed at their exceptional durability.

Your Sirona dental handpieces will require regular maintenance. Eventually, they may require repairs. If you fail to repair these instruments, when necessary, you will quickly find that your dental practice will suffer.

What Makes Electric-Driven Sirona Handpieces the Best?

The secret to electric-driven Sirona dental handpieces is the immense torque and significantly less noise as a result of the included micromotor. While first revealed by the company nearly 5 decades ago, this amazing power device delivers exceptional levels of power. As a result, practitioners are able to engage in more activities and experience higher levels of precision in cutting. Tasks are capable of being completed more quickly and patients are more comfortable. The instruments are so durable and advanced that most practices become completely dependable on them.

If you fail to maintain these dental handpieces – eventually – you will encounter an issue and a repair will be necessary. If you do not have the repairs done immediately, the dental instrument may become loud, start to vibrate, and the number of activities that you can do with it will be drastically reduced. It will become uncomfortable for you and uncomfortable for your patients. As a result, you will find that your clients become dissatisfied. While it is true that Sirona is the best, your failure to properly maintain and immediately repair the instruments will result in the worst-case scenario for your dental practice.

Needed Repairs Result in Discomfort

Sirona specializes in designing dental handpieces that have the highest level of comfort. The casing is composed of the highest-quality titanium which makes way for a surface that is easy to grip and warm upon touching. The contours are smooth and flow optimally ensuring the highest level of efficiency when gripping the instrument. The internal motor is strategically located. This allows for optimal balance and eliminates the possibility of fatigue to be experienced during dental procedures. If a repair is needed to one of the components of your Sirona handpieces, it should be handled immediately. If not, it could result in unnecessary vibrations and an issue with the balance – which could result in discomfort for both you and your patients.

Innovation

Dental practices that have a desire to create a state-of-the-art facility often turn to Sirona because of the innovation and technology associated with the brand. Examples include a wide assortment of head pieces, lightweight casings, and SmartClip technology. It is essential to have regularly scheduled maintenance on your dental instruments to ensure the consistency of the innovative technology associated with Sirona products. If you fail to do this and a repair becomes necessary, you should take the time to have the unit fixed immediately. The faster a problem is resolved, the better. If you wait too long, you may lose the innovative functionality of your dental handpieces, which will have negative consequences in your practice.

5 Must-Do Steps to Avoid Breakdown

Regular maintenance is a critical component to extending the life of your Sirona dental handpieces. The following outlines 5 steps that should be taken regularly to avoid breakdown and the need for repairs:

When caring for your dental handpieces, only utilize cleaning products and lubrication products that are specifically designed for that dental instrument. You will find this information in the manufacturer paperwork included with the device upon purchase. Pay close attention to all details regarding the various components of your Sirona dental instruments such as caring for the couplers, the nozzles, and all related adapters.

When cleaning the Sirona dental handpieces in your practice, it is imperative that you avoid using disinfectants that include chemicals. If you do, the heat from the unit will react with the chemicals in the disinfectant. As a result, the metal casing of the instrument will be negatively impacted. You will find that corrosion may occur. Additionally, the chemicals may start to build up on the surface of the casing, which results in degradation.

Once you use the dental handpiece, you will find that it is warm following usage. The instrument should be allowed to cool down naturally. You should never attempt to cool it by running it under cold water. Not only do you put the casing at risk for damage that needs to be repaired, you will also jeopardize the turbine.

When oiling your Sirona dental handpieces, it should be applied according to the manufacturer instructions. If it is not appropriately oiled, it could result in the lubricant not reaching the bearings. If you run it without oiled bearings, it could damage the instrument and you will find that it needs to be repaired after.

Finally, once the oil has been appropriately applied to the instrument, it should be ran to expel any of the excess oil remaining inside. Too much oil inside could result in the instrument needing to be repaired. This step should always be done prior to the initiation of the autoclaving that is necessary.

Dental handpieces and the attachments utilized with those handpieces – such as reusable angles and low-speed varieties of motors – must be sterilized with heat between patients. According to studies, the internal areas of these items have the potential to experience contamination by materials that stem from patients while being used. If proper cleaning and sterilization is not performed, a patient or patients may suffer exposure to materials that are potentially infectious. If sterilization of the dental handpiece is not performed properly, it could negatively impact the lifespan of the device. Here, you will learn the dos and the don’ts of dental handpiece sterilization.

The Dos

The following outlines that which should be done when sterilizing the dental handpieces of your practice:

Your practice should follow the infection control procedures that are outlined in the CDC Guidelines issued in 2003 and the updated measures as outlined in the CDC Summary that was released in the year of 2016.

Sterilizing monitoring must be put into place in your practice as part of the in-office infection control procedures.

Dental practices should only use dental handpieces that are cleared by the FDA.

When sterilizing dental handpieces in your practice, you must do so according to the instructions issued by the manufacturer of the dental instruments.

Flush water through the handpiece in full operation for a minimum of 30 seconds in order to successfully remove all potential contaminants from the internal-based water line.

Clean off biofilm using an appropriate brush under running water. It is acceptable – in most cases – to utilize a mild detergent during this step.

Dry off the dental handpiece to avoid the process of oxidation from occurring within the chamber as this could result in the onset of corrosion.

Spray oil into the drive airline using only the mandated lubricating tip. You should spray until this oil emerges from the head of the device as this ensures that the bearings have been properly oiled.

Always run the oil completely out of the device. This helps in preventing coagulation when the dental handpiece goes through autoclaving.

Install a flush station in your practice. Perform necessary tasks and remove the bur. If you have a handpiece with a level, make sure it is closed when sterilizing.

The Don’ts

The following outlines that which should NOT be done when sterilizing the dental handpieces that you use in your practice:

Engage in the autoclaving process as outlined in the manufacturer guidelines of your particular dental instrument.

The sterilizing process should go through the dry cycle, completely.

Bag the dental handpiece in order to avoid contamination during the sterilization process. It is recommended that you use a paper or plastic bag. This allows the steam to dissipate easily during autoclaving.

Once the process is completely done, dry the handpiece. You should place the bag you use with a paper side facing up directly on top of the sterilization equipment. The hear will rise and will completely dry the handpiece.

If possible, have a fully automated cleaning and lube station installed in your practice. While this is a tad on the expensive side, most manufacturers will provide an extended warranty on their dental handpieces if the automated station is used that is purchased from them.

Once sterilization is complete, you should NEVER run the instruments under cold water in an effort to cool them down more quickly. This is highly detrimental to the instrument.

Never use alcohol as a cleaning agent during sterilization. This substance is known to dehydrate the spores of the instrument and it results in an increased resistance to the sterilization process.

Never use any type of chemical-based solutions for cleaning or sterilizing your dental handpieces.

Never use any type of product that is abrasive on your dental handpieces. Not only does this lead to handpiece corrosion, it could make your patients sick.

Do not attempt to maintain or repair your dental handpieces if you lack the knowledge, skill, and confidence to do so. Have a professional handle these aspects of care for you.

In recent months, one of the most prevalent issues observed during the maintenance of dental handpieces received from dental practitioners is improper lubrication. While a simple step to perform, many are neglecting this critical component of their dental instrument maintenance plans.

As a result, unnecessary repairs are being performed to instruments that would – otherwise – only require simple adjustments and upkeep. Additionally, many dental handpieces are having to be completely replaced due to the undue stress being placed on internal components. To make your handpieces last and to save money, lubrication is essential.

Why is Dental Handpiece Lubrication Important?

If dental handpieces are not properly lubricated, it results in increased friction and undue wear and tear. These situations occur if there is too little lubrication or if there is too much lubrication. In the case of too little, the dental instrument will become exceptionally dry. Once this occurs, the components of that device will then seize up, rendering the handpiece completely inoperable. In some cases, components may be replaced and resolution is achieved. In other cases, a complete replacement may be necessary.

Do All Types of Dental Handpieces Need to be Lubricated?

Nearly every single manufacturer of dental handpieces recommends that when dental handpieces are cleaned that they should also be lubricated. In most instances, prior to the autoclave process. Ensure that at this time that flushing or purging of the dental handpiece is performed prior to removing it from the tubing associated with the air supply.

When Should the Dental Handpieces in My Practice be Lubricated?

The spindle or the chuck of the dental handpieces in your practice should be lubricated – at least – once a day. You must utilize high-quality oil and a pointed lubrication adapter. Once inserted into the dental instrument, you should spray the lubrication oil for approximately 2 seconds. You will see the lubrication oil come directly through the head. Once this happens, stop spraying and proceed with your maintenance.

What Should I Do After Lubrication?

Once you have lubricated your dental handpiece, attach the instrument directly to the dental unit in your practice. You should permit it to run in full operation for approximately 10 seconds. Not only does this provide ample time for the internal components to get the right amount of lubrication, it will help in expelling any unnecessary lubricant service oil from the device.

Where Does the Lubricant Oil Go on a Dental Handpiece?

Look at the dental instrument. You will see a couple of holes. You want to find the smallest ones. In most cases, the oil will go in these two holes. These are the air inlet holes. You should then run the handpiece for up to 10 seconds to ensure that the oil is properly distributed to the necessary internal components. If you are unsure as to how to properly lubricate the dental handpiece, you may refer to the paperwork that was included with the device on purchase from the manufacturer.

How Are Slow Speed Dental Handpieces Lubricated?

Slow-speed dental handpieces should have a few little drops of service oil placed directly into the driver-based air hole. Once this is done, it should be permitted to run at a slow speed until the oil starts to come out of the head of the device. If you find that there is additional oil in the instrument, simply continue to run it until the excess is properly expelled. The goal is to ensure that the bearings and the chuck receive the proper amount of lubrication on a daily basis, but that service oil does not build up within the device.

Do I Clean or Lubricate Dental Handpieces First?

The maintenance plan of the dental handpieces of your practice should always start with a thorough cleaning. Immediately thereafter, lubrication should be performed. Once the process is finished, the dental instrument should be sterilized according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember to choose a lubricant that has high viscosity, is capable of remaining stable at high temperatures, and properly oil all internal components.

Laser dentistry is a type of specialized dentistry that utilizes specially-designed laser systems for the purpose and intent of treating a wide array of dental conditions and issues. Commercially, it became part of the dental practice for procedures that directly involved tooth tissue in the year of 1989. The term “LASER” stands for “Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. In laser dentistry, the light beam is created by an instrument. When the beam comes into contact with the tissue, it manipulates that tissue. Continue reading to learn more.

What is a Laser in Dentistry?

The laser is a beam emitted from a pre-designed instrument that is utilized in dentistry for the purpose and intent of removing tooth decay, preparing present enamel for a dental filling, reshaping the gum tissue, removing lesions, removing tissue for biopsies, removing bacteria from the mouth during the procedure of a root canal, and more.

Is Laser Dentistry Effective?

Yes, laser dentistry is a fast and highly effective solution in the dental industry. It utilizes both light and heat to perform a variety of tasks. It is a minimally-invasive procedure that allows dental professionals to easily – and painlessly – perform work inside of the mouth.

Can Lasers Remove Cavities?

Yes, the lasers utilized in the dental industry are able to quickly remove cavities within the mouth. Many patients find that they prefer laser treatment for cavities because of the fact that they do not typically have to have anesthesia or Novocain shots to numb the inside of the mouth. It is almost completely painless for most patients. If you are a dental practitioner, it is in your best interest to offer these treatments to your patients.

Is Laser Dentistry Better Than Drill?

Yes, laser dentistry is much better than utilizing a drill because of the fact that it does not produce uncomfortable and scary vibrations and it is painless. The laser instrument utilized produces a very focused beam that may focus on specific areas of the mouth with a high level of precision. Additionally, in most instances, there is no need for anesthesia of any type. Most patients are able to bypass having a numbing shot in the mouth when they elect to utilize a laser dentistry treatment.

How Do Dental Diode Lasers Work?

Dental diode lasers are a type of directly absorbed energy that is utilized for the purpose and intent of cutting. This energy is directly absorbed in the body through water, hemoglobin, pigmentation, and melanin. The focused beam of the laser will only apply to the tissue. It is not strong enough to cut through bone. However, laser treatments may be used in conjunction with other dental instruments that are designed to cut through bone for the purpose of addressing tissue-based issues within the mouth.

Can Laser Dentistry be Used in a Root Canal?

Yes, laser dentistry may be used for root canals. In fact, it is not the advised method because it is less aggressive. Furthermore, it is less painful for a patient. Additionally, those that get a root canal with a laser often have a quicker recovery with fewer complications such as inflammation and bleeding.

When laser dentistry is utilized, the root canal is finished more quickly and the patient does not have to make as many trips to the dentist. Furthermore, this is highly effective in limiting the necessity for the use of a local anesthetic.

Is Laser Deep Cleaning Effective?

Yes, laser deep cleaning is highly effective. In fact, this technique for deep cleaning is now the preferred choice among both dental practitioners and their patients. It is considered to be a gentle approach. Patients find that they experience less discomfort, pain, swelling, and bleeding after having this procedure done. Best of all, the regular diet of the patient may be continued much quicker than after that of a traditional deep cleaning.

Is Gum Lasering Safe?

Yes, gum lasering is safe. In fact, it is now considered to be one of the safest treatments available within the dental industry. While there are risks, they are quite low. In fact, bleeding and infection are rarely experienced after a gum lasering procedure.

If improperly maintained, they can detrimentally affect the practice. These dental devices are used to remove decay, prepare teeth for fillings, polish those fillings, alter prostheses, and other tasks that are related to cosmetic dentistry.

In this guide, we will outline the 10 most common mistakes made by dental practitioners that will negatively impact the overall life of the dental handpiece.

The first mistake that is often made is that the practitioner chooses to use a chemical-based substance to clean the device prior to the process of sterilization. This act is known to create reactions that lead to the overall degradation of the dental appliance once it is subjected to the exceptionally high temperatures of the autoclave.

Failure to clean the fiber optics could result in the staining and the breakdown of the lighting unit on the dental handpiece. Not only does this drastically reduce the amount of light that is transmitted within the operating field, but it could also – ultimately – lead to the damage of the light.

If dental handpieces have contaminants within the water lines or the airline and are permitted to run through the dental handpiece, this will contaminate and potentially damage the auto chuck component.

The autoclave unit within the practice must be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. Failure to do this will result in the accumulation of contaminants. If dental handpieces are placed within the unit for the purpose and intent of sterilization, they, too, will become contaminated. Depending on the types of substances on the inside of the autoclave device, the internal components of the handpieces may experience corrosion and other complications.

The next mistake that many dental practitioners make is that they will leave the burs that are located in a dental handpiece with a manual chuck. This will result in high levels of debris accumulating inside of that chuck. If left in an auto chuck, the internal springs will experience a high level of tension. Once introduced to high levels of heat, those springs will weaken in a significant manner. Either situation will result in problems with the dental handpiece while it is being used on patients.

Many practitioners believe that an ultrasonic cleaner may be used to clean the dental handpiece. While this makes sense, it is imperative to NEVER place a dental handpiece completely within fluids. In doing so, the unit could quit working right away.

Lubrication is essential when it comes to the care and maintenance of dental handpieces. There are several holes on the dental handpiece. These include the water, chip air, exhaust, and drive air tube. The only hole that should be lubricated is the drive air tube hole. This is because it is the only one that leads directly into the internal components. If any hole other than that is lubricated, it will cause complications to the functionality of those holes and the internal components will experience drying due to lack of lubrication.

Immediately after lubricating, many practitioners forget to run the dental handpiece. If this occurs, that oil will start to accumulate and gum up directly into the turbine and possibly other moving parts. Eventually, this will lead to operational failure of the dental handpiece.

Many practitioners fail to place enough lubrication. Because of this, it never reaches the moving components of the dental appliance. It is imperative to read the maintenance guidelines associated with the dental handpieces that you use in your practice to ensure the proper amount of lubrication.

The final mistake that is often made with dental handpieces during internal maintenance is the fact that it is removed too quickly prior to becoming completely dried. If this occurs, condensation will build up inside of the appliance. As this occurs, rust will develop and the internal components will be exposed to moisture – all of which could result in immediate damage.

Since 2020 and the arrival of COVID-19, dental practitioners have been hyper-focused on the protocols surrounding infection control. However, now that more and more of the population has become vaccinated and cases are occurring less often, it is of the highest concern that diligence is waning just a bit. The truth of the matter is, though, dental practitioners must continue following protocols when it comes to infection control. Vigilance is necessary now that COVID-19 has made us all aware of just how profound disease transmission can be and the impact it has on human life.

source:pexels

A Strong Commitment to Infection Control Compliance is Essential for Dental Practitioners in a Post-COVID World

In 1996, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out a large number of recommendations and standard practices for precautionary measures for dental practitioners. The guidelines outline hand hygiene, the incorporation and utilization of personal protective equipment, the safety measures concerning sharps, the disinfection of environmental surfaces, the process of sterilization, and even practices associated with safety and injections.

Now that we have pushed through a pandemic, that same organization continues to push for controlling environments for the purpose and intent of stopping the exposure of pathogens.

Transmission-Based Precautions

The CDC is now encouraging dental practitioners to engage in what is referred to as “transmission-based precautions”. These are those that relate to treating patients who have an infection of a pathogen. Specifically, those that spread through droplets, direct contact, and even through the air.

By using the main recommendations and guidelines, practitioners may protect themselves and other patients from viruses; however, it must be taken a step further to ensure optimal protection and everyone must stay completely compliant and vigilant in order to achieve the highest level of success.

Are We Experiencing the Hawthorne Effect?

It is a known fact that infection control strategies are effective at the overall transmission of the harmful pathogens that are currently in existence. That is, only if we are in full compliance with those strategies. Dental practitioners are suffering from PPE fatigue.

They are overworked. They are uncomfortable. They are tired of all the extra steps needed for disinfection and sterilization.

When being observed, people will take the extra steps; however, it has been determined that if one is not observed, the overall adherence to the protocols is significantly decreased.

This is the Hawthorne Effect.

To ensure that we continue to protect ourselves, our coworkers, and those that visit our practices, we must NOT let our guard down. We must continue complete compliance.

Steps to Ensure Infection Control Compliance

The following outlines the most productive steps to ensuring optimal infection control compliance in dental practices:

Clean the hands using an alcohol rub or soap and water. When washing the hands, wash for a minimum of 20 seconds. As an additional measure, completely sanitize prior to placing gloves on the hands.

Dental instruments – such as handpieces and air-water syringes – create sprays that are capable of traveling small distances. You should use masks, protective goggles with or without an added face shield, a gown over your clothes, and gloves. Not only will you protect yourself, but you will protect your patients. Remember to change all personal protective equipment between each patient. While it is true that this may prove time-consuming, you will be playing a productive role in reducing the transmission of potentially harmful pathogens within your practice and the community.

Next, wear the appropriate mask. If you work in an area where COVID-19 or other dangerous pathogens are being transmitted, you should have a N95 mask that is fitted for you. If you work in an area with low transmission rates, a standard 3-layered surgical mask with an additional face shield is recommended. Again, dental practitioners are subjected to bodily fluids and other substances that contain germs. It is better to err on the side of caution and be over-protected rather than under-protected.

Clean all dental instruments – such as dental handpieces – according to manufacturer guidelines and ensure that all pieces are sterilized appropriately. You should have your dental handpieces regularly maintained to ensure that biological material is not lodged in the interior areas and that the motors are operating optimally.

You must clean and completely disinfect all environmental surfaces and all devices within the practice. These areas are consistently contaminated by touching, splashing of fluids, and droplets that move around a room during the time when a patient is receiving care. Remember, you must completely clean first. Immediately following the cleaning is disinfecting. It is advised that dental practitioners utilize intermediate-level types of disinfectants as these will eliminate almost all bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

The Aerosol Control System

To ensure optimal infection control in your dental practice, you should purchase and integrate an aerosol control system.

This is a specially-designed system that removes contaminants that are created during patient procedures. The contaminants removed include various types of droplets, blood, dental aerosols, viruses, and more! This is made possible by the integration of a high-tech Quattro filtration system that is layered.

All viruses and bacteria that is absorbed through the system is killed in 99.9% of times. By having this system in your dental practice, you reduce the risk of pathogen transmission and the development of infections.

It keeps the air in your office clean and completely safe!

The following outlines the highlights of this amazing technological system:

The system is highly convenient as it comes with a wheeled base and an easy to operate remote control for the highest level of efficiency

The unit is both compact and extremely portable, allowing for a sleek, effective design

It is an extremely powerful unit in that it has 10 different levels that exceed up to a capacity of 265 CFM

The filtration unit is 4 layers and includes a germicidal UV-C with nearly 100% effectiveness

The device comes with a 30-month warranty

In recent years, the dental industry has evolved from its original humble beginnings to now being almost 100% digitalized. A few examples of digital components include CAD/CAM, the integration and utilization of 3D printing technology, and intraoral scanning systems. Conventional and digital techniques and components all have their advantages and disadvantages, it is quite evident that digital components and techniques will reign superior. Continue reading to learn more about the digital dentistry trend.

In the dental industry, the term “digital dentistry” is an umbrella term that mainly relates to computer aided design, intraoral scanning systems, computer aided manufacturing, and 3D printing techniques and components technology.

Together, all of these individual aspects of digital-based dentistry work together for the purpose and intent of the transferring of information between our physical world and the digital world in a quick and efficient manner and to ensure the comfort of patients while boosting their outcome.

Let’s take the example of a patient cast model. First, the intraoral scanning system obtains the model taken from the patient. It collects the information and then transitions it into a type of replica that is digital in nature. Then, that data is stored and saved as a type of digital file that may be printed into a physical copy – if need be. That file is then integrated into a software program (CAD/CAM). It is when using this software that a dentist is able to making modifications – which include preset boundaries, per patient. Once finished, 3D printing is then used to create a physical reproduction of that which was accessed on the modification software.

The above-mentioned process is just one example of how digital dentistry is used. The actual capabilities of the technology can vary from one procedure to another – from creating an in-office single crown to creating an entire set of monolithic dentures.

In most instances, components of the digital dentistry world are used for the foundation of creating or producing dental appliances and other devices; however, digital dentistry is also used for learning various types of information and also for the sharing of various types of information with others.

Today, all relevant information pertaining to patients and procedures may be stored in a digitalized type of manner. Long gone are the days when a dental practice is completely dependent upon physical files that must be physically stored and may be physically touched (tangible). As a result of this, information may be stored and shared – seamlessly – with the greatest effort of ease. All it takes is a little stroke or two on a computer, tablet, or smartphone in order to gain immediate access to a wealth of information. Files may be easily shared – regardless of location.

By not having the need for physical space to store patient files and other types of documents, practices are not only saving money, but they no longer have to worry over files experiencing damage or deterioration while being stored.

In the same respect, if a mistake is made on the file, it can be much easier resolved when it is a digital file rather than a physical file. If physical files experience a mistake, the individual responsible for creating that entry would have to completely start over to make sure that the proper information is within the file.

Digital dentistry offers many practitioners many advancements from the common, conventional methods previously utilized in the industry. The downfalls – though not much – are the fact that the costs associated with start-ups are typically high, the purchase of the necessary equipment may prove costly, and the training of the personnel within a practice may be expensive and time-consuming.

The truth of the matter is, though, that once a practice gets past all of this, digital dentistry components and techniques will aid in saving money, reducing mistakes, increasing the comfort level of patients, and optimizing the success of the practice.

If you have an interest in digital dentistry, we highly recommend getting involved as quickly as possible. Not only will your practice start experiencing many benefits, but you will discover that you are among the few in the industry that have a competitive edge.
In this guide, we will expound on the amendments to the infection control rules as outlined by the Dental Quality Assurance Commission. It is important to note that these amendments include numerous recommendations as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All dental practitioners and associated staff should become familiar with these amendments so that all activities within a practice are in line with legal guidelines and protocols.

When Do Dentists and Their Staff Wear Gloves?

Gloves are required for all individuals that are part of a dental practice when items will be touched that will go directly into the mouth of a patient. Additionally, gloves are required when touching items or substances that have been located within the mouth of a patient.

Who Should Receive Masks in the Dental Practice?

Current guidelines state that dentists, their staff, and all patients should be provided with facial masks while on location. Additionally, any individual that is not receiving care – such as those that go to an appointment with a patient – should be provided with a facial mask. It is the responsibility of all healthcare practitioners – regardless of setting and specialty – to educate all in the importance of taking infection control and prevention steps to prevent the spread of respiratory pathogens.

When is the Deadline to Start Sterilization the Motors of Low-Speed Dental Handpieces?

The commission has provided all dentists and their staff a grace period for starting the sterilization of motors for low-speed dental handpieces.

The deadline is August 31st of the year of 2022.

This is due to the expense associated with purchasing any extra dental handpieces and systems that are required for the sterilization of those products. The act of sterilization aids in destroying all varieties of microorganisms and that includes a wide assortment of bacterial-based spores that are considered to be highly resistant.

Will Dental Practices Have to Purchase Brand New Motors for Low-Speed Dental Handpieces?

No, it is not a requirement to purchase brand new dental handpiece motors as most that are currently available on the market may undergo motor sterilization.

If the dental handpieces that you have in your practice may not undergo motor sterilization, it will be necessary to purchase new low-speed dental handpieces in order to be compliant with both the commission and the CDC.

Do Other Types of Dental Handpieces Have to be Sterilized?

Yes, all types of dental handpieces must be sterilized, not just those that are identified as being “low-speed”. That particular designation was made to reference all dental handpieces that are air-driven, whether they are identified as “low-speed” or “high-speed”.

It does not matter what type of handpieces you have in your practice or the type of power source that they use, they must all be sterilized according to the manufacturing guidelines of that particular make and model.

Are Battery Operated Dental Handpieces Required to be Sterilized?

If your dental handpiece is operated with a battery, it should not be sterilized. This is because of the fact that those companies that manufacture the battery-operated models specifically state that they cannot undergo standard sterilization processes.

Dentist practitioners and their associated staff are instructed to only use battery-operated dental handpieces that are capable of having their various parts isolated so that they may be successfully disinfected and sterilized.

When is Sterilization Required in Dental Instruments?

If the dental instruments that you use are approved by the FDA, are used according to the manufacturer guidelines, or is not specifically mentioned within the commission’s rules, they are to be sterilized.

If the product may be removed from water or air lines, it must be sterilized.

Examples of components that must undergo the sterilization process include all types of dental handpieces, all motors of dental handpieces, prophylaxis angle tools, scaling tips, and tips that are used in conjunction with both water lines and air lines.

Should Dental Instruments Be Wrapped if Going to Be Used Immediately?

No, if you are going to engage in the act of flash sterilization you do not have to bag or wrap any sterilized instrument. This act should only be done if a tool that is considered critical has experienced some type of unexpected contamination and that same type of tool is required in order to successfully complete a procedure with a patient. Otherwise, all sterilized items should be bagged or wrapped after undergoing a comprehensive daily sterilization.

What if There is a Breach in Infection Control in a Dental Practice?

If a breach occurs in your office in terms of infection control, the local health department should be contacted immediately and an incident report must be immediately completed. You may also use the tools and resources as provided by the CDC, referenced below:

The Steps for Evaluating a Breach in Infection Control

The Patient Notification Kit for Practitioners
